Effects of probiotics on the gastrointestinal microbiome in dysbiotic individuals with depression

Abstract

Introduction: Intestinal probiotics play a crucial role in the communication between the gut and the brain. Intestinal dysbiosis is characterized by alterations in the microbiota, with a predominance of pathogenic bacteria, resulting in increased intestinal permeability and local and systemic inflammation. The vagal system acts as a communication channel between the microbiota and the brain. Objective: To evaluate recent studies on probiotic supplementation in gut modulation in patients with dysbiosis and depression. Methods: An integrative literature review was conducted in January 2020 using Google Scholar, Biblioteca Virtual de Saúde (BVS), and PubMed. After applying filters, 30 articles were selected, with 25 excluded based on title, abstract, and full text. Results: The studies indicate a consensus on the use of probiotics to reduce depression symptoms, suggesting their viability as an alternative treatment for dysbiosis associated with depression. Conclusion: Probiotic supplementation in individuals with dysbiosis and depression proves to be an effective strategy in reducing depressive symptoms.
