Effects of omega 3, magnesium and vitamin B12 supplementation on mental status in elderly people with Alzheimer's: a cross-sectional study

Objective: The effects of omega-3, magnesium, and vitamin B12 supplementation on the mental state of elderly individuals with Alzheimer's were evaluated. Methods: A cross-sectional study was approved by the Ethics and Research Committee of CONEP/Plataforma Brasil (N°2.423.431). The mental state was assessed using the Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE). After the diagnosis, supplementation of omega-3 (500mg DHA), magnesium (400 mg), and vitamin B12 (500µg) was initiated for 90 days, with re-evaluations every 30 days. Eight elderly individuals were evaluated, divided into two groups: Control (N=4, non-supplemented) and Supplemented (N=4, supplemented). Results: It was found that elderly individuals with Alzheimer's showed a reduction in mental state at the initial period. After nutritional supplementation, there was a significant increase in mental state compared to the initial period (p-value ≤ 0.05). The supplemented group showed an increase in the MMSE orientation and recall parameters over time (p-value ≤ 0.05). Conclusion: The elderly individuals with Alzheimer's in this study who were supplemented with omega-3, magnesium, and vitamin B12 showed improvement in their mental state during the supplementation period. However, more research with a larger sample size is needed to confirm the effectiveness of this supplementation.
