Objective: To evaluate the effectiveness of carbohydrate counting as a nutritional strategy in the treatment of diabetes mellitus, as well as its effects on metabolic control and anthropometric variables. Methods: This is an integrative review of the literature, carried out in March and April 2021, in which the Scielo, BVS and PubMed databases were used, considering studies published in English, Portuguese and Spanish, in the period 2011 to 2021. Results: Of the total of 180 articles found, 6 met the established criteria. The main results found were the reduction in glycated hemoglobin levels, reduction in Body Mass Index (BMI) and Waist Circumference (WC) values, greater quality of life and satisfaction with treatment and increase in total cholesterol (TC) and low-density lipoprotein (LDL). -w). Conclusions: Studies show improvements in glycemic and metabolic control, as well as quality of life related to dietary restrictions. However, more studies are needed to prove its effects on anthropometric and biochemical variables in adults.
