Abstract

Introduction: Sepsis is a systemic inflammatory response to an infection. Nutrition plays an important role in disease therapy, with the use of nutrients with immunomodulatory functions. Objective: This review aimed to identify the possible effects of administering immunomodulatory drugs in patients affected by sepsis. Methods: The PubMed and Lilacs databases were used, published in English, Portuguese and Spanish, from 2011 to 2021. Results: Of the total of 173 articles found, 10 met the inclusion criteria. The most used immunomodulators were fatty acids, antioxidant vitamins and glutamine. Conclusion: There is evidence of the effectiveness of immunomodulators in clinical practice as aids in the treatment of sepsis. However, more studies are needed in order to prove the ability of immunomodulators to reduce the severity of the disease and determine, more clearly, the dosage and duration of supplementation.
