Abstract

Introduction: Adverse food reactions represent a significant challenge to children's health, especially in regions with limited access to specialized services. In Baixada Fluminense, understanding the prevalence of these reactions and their impacts is essential to guide care and food education strategies. Objective: To investigate the prevalence of adverse food reactions in children aged 7 months to 10 years in Baixada Fluminense and analyze the impacts on child health. Methods: This is a cross-sectional and exploratory study with 121 participants. Data were collected through online questionnaires completed by parents and caregivers, covering demographic information, reaction history, clinical diagnosis, and dietary adaptations. The analysis included descriptive statistics to characterize the sample and key findings. Results: It was found that 26.5% (n=32) of children had adverse food reactions, with milk, eggs, and shrimp as the main triggers. Only 28.1% (n=9) of cases had a formal diagnosis of food allergies or intolerances, highlighting gaps in access to specialized diagnosis. The most common symptoms were skin reactions, gastrointestinal issues, and respiratory discomfort, with many families facing difficulties in adjusting their diets. Professional support was mainly provided by pediatricians, with low participation from nutritionists. Conclusion: The study highlights the need to improve diagnostic methods, expand multidisciplinary care, and implement educational actions to support families. These measures are essential to prevent complications and promote the health and quality of life of children with adverse food reactions in Baixada Fluminense.
