The efects oat beta-glucan consumption on the lipid profile of patients with hypercholesterolemia

Introduction: Oat beta-glucan has been highlighted for its lipid-lowering properties, being a potential nutritional intervention in controlling the lipid profile of these patients. Objective: To identify in national and international literature the effects of consuming oat beta-glucan on the lipid profile of patients with hypercholesterolemia. Methods: The Pubmed, Scielo and LILACS databases were searched for studies that demonstrated the effects of beta-glucan on lipid control in hypercholesterolemic patients from September to November 2022. Results: By applying pre-established search criteria with the terms “oats”, “cholesterol”, “beta-glucan” and “hypercholesterolemia”, 81 articles were found, from which 4 studies were selected covering the objectives for this integrative review. In summary, most studies have shown that supplementation with 3 g/day of oat beta-glucan has its medium-term effectiveness confirmed in reducing LDL-c and TC in hypercholesterolemic individuals, not indicating significant changes in HDL-c and triglycerides. Conclusion: The use of oat beta-glucan proved to be a diet therapy strategy that can help control lipids in hypercholesterolemic patients when associated with a healthy diet.
