Abstract

Introduction: Bariatric surgery represents an alternative for individuals with morbid obesity who are unable to lose weight through traditional treatments or who have chronic comorbidities. Objective: This study evaluated the prevalence of binge eating disorder (BED) in patients who underwent bariatric surgery at the University Hospital of the Federal University of Paraíba (UFPB). Methods: This was a cross-sectional study conducted at the University Hospital of the UFPB, the convenience sample was composed of patients from the hospital’s bariatric surgery outpatient clinic, personal, anthropometric and physical activity data were collected. To assess the severity of binge eating behavior, the "Binge Eating Scale" questionnaire was used. Results: A total of 43 patients were analyzed, with a mean age of 47 years, predominantly women, most of whom were approximately one year post-operative. After surgery, 6.98% (3) of participants were classified as healthy according to BMI, 32.56% (14) were overweight, and 9.3% (4) remained morbidly obese. Excess weight loss varied from 14.69% to 115%, with an average of 61.85%. According to the Binge Eating Scale, 9.3% (4) of patients reported having the disorder, with 4.65% (2) experiencing severe binge eating and 4.65% (2) moderate binge eating. The results indicate that, although the majority of participants achieved good post-operative outcomes, with 90.69% (39) remaining physically active and 76.75% (33) overcoming morbid obesity, some patients may still develop eating disorders in the post-operative period. Conclusion: These findings suggest that bariatric surgery is effective in promoting weight loss and improving patients' health, highlighting the importance of long-term multidisciplinary follow-up to ensure sustainable results and the ongoing health of individuals undergoing this procedure.
