Epidemiological profile of hospital morbidity due to inguinal hernia in Minas Gerais (2021–2025) and the role of physiotherapy in the postoperative period

Introduction: An inguinal hernia involves the protrusion of intra-abdominal contents through a defect in the abdominal wall in the inguinal region, representing one of the most common surgical conditions in general clinical practice. Objective: To describe the epidemiological profile of hospital morbidity due to inguinal hernia in Minas Gerais between 2021 and 2025, correlating the findings with the importance of postoperative physical therapy and highlighting its contribution to functional recovery, the prevention of complications, and the return to activities of daily living. Methods: An epidemiological study using data from the SUS Informatics Department (DATASUS)—specifically regarding hospital morbidity within the Unified Health System (SUS)—applying inclusion and exclusion criteria and subsequently tabulating the data for the 2021–2025 period. Results: A total of 94,749 hospital admissions for inguinal hernia were recorded in Minas Gerais between 2021 and 2025, showing an upward trend throughout the period and peaking in 2024. The data revealed a predominance of male patients (88.0%), the 60–69 age group (24.09%), individuals self-identifying as *pardo* (mixed-race/brown) (56.32%), and elective admissions (88.0%). These findings align with existing literature by demonstrating how population aging, male anatomical characteristics, and the resumption of elective surgeries following the COVID-19 pandemic influenced the rise in hospitalizations. Furthermore, the results underscore the importance of postoperative physical therapy for herniorrhaphy, as it facilitates early mobilization, reduces respiratory and thromboembolic complications, manages pain, promotes abdominal muscle strengthening, and accelerates functional recovery. Conclusion: Inguinal hernia represents a significant public health issue in Minas Gerais; it is essential to integrate epidemiological knowledge into the planning of care interventions, while emphasizing the role of physiotherapy as a strategy to enhance the quality of care, reduce complications, and ensure a safe return to activities of daily living.
