Epidemiological profile of morbidity due to Parkinson's Disease in Minas Gerais (2021-2025)

Abstract

Introduction: Parkinson's disease is a progressive and irreversible neurodegenerative disease that affects the central nervous system, particularly the motor system, producing tremors, rigidity, bradykinesia, and postural instability. Objective: This study described the profile of patients hospitalized for Parkinson's disease in the state of Minas Gerais, correlating it with the impacts of physiotherapy on the quality of treatment offered, in order to contribute to the direction of assistance and rehabilitation strategies. Methods: This is a retrospective and quantitative approach. The data source used will be linked to DATASUS, through the SUS hospital morbidity data, adopting inclusion and exclusion criteria, and subsequently tabulating the data, between 2021 and 2025, a period that encompasses the during and after the pandemic period. Results: In 5 years, Minas Gerais registered 788 cases of hospitalizations for Parkinson's disease, predominantly in the 60-69 age group, of mixed race, male, and of an urgent nature. It is important to consider that advances in specialized care and follow-up may have contributed to greater identification and recording of cases. Conclusion: The need to act in the prevention of unfavorable outcomes for patients living with Parkinson's Disease was highlighted, which can be achieved through improvements in access to specialized health services and contributes to appropriate treatment and a more favorable prognosis. Motor physiotherapy stands out as a promising intervention for maintaining functionality and should be promoted in the public network and encouraged in future scientific investigations.
