Epidemiological profile of hospitalizations for pulmonary tuberculosis in Minas Gerais between 2021 and 2025 and the importance of Physiotherapy in the treatment of the disease

Introduction: Pulmonary tuberculosis is an infectious condition caused by the bacterium Mycobacterium tuberculosis, also called Koch's bacillus, which mainly affects the lungs, but can affect other organs and systems of the human body. Objective: This study described the profile of individuals hospitalized for pulmonary tuberculosis in Minas Gerais, relating it to the importance of pulmonary physiotherapy during treatment. Methods: This is an epidemiological study with data retrieved from the Department of Information and Informatics of the Brazilian Unified Health System (DATASUS), through the SUS hospital morbidity data, adopting inclusion and exclusion criteria, and subsequently tabulating the data. Results: Between 2021 and 2025, Minas Gerais presented 4,336 hospitalizations for pulmonary tuberculosis, predominantly in adults aged 40 to 49 years, of mixed race and male. These results suggest the persistence of pulmonary tuberculosis as a significant public health problem in the state, even with advances in diagnostic and therapeutic methods and disease control strategies. Physiotherapeutic intervention contributes to improved pulmonary ventilation, promotes the removal of bronchial secretions, assists in lung expansion, and reduces the risk of secondary respiratory complications such as atelectasis and associated infections. Conclusion: An increasing trend in hospitalizations was observed over the years analyzed, highlighting the relevance of pulmonary physiotherapy as an integral part of the care of patients with tuberculosis, especially in cases with respiratory impairment and functional limitations.
