Effects of exercises with primordial movements in pregnant women

Abstract

Introduction: Pregnancy is a period marked by physiological and biomechanical changes that can lead to musculoskeletal discomfort, particularly in the lower back. Fortunately, physical activity can help manage this phase. Exercises involving primal movements (PM) have proven to be an effective training approach; this modality is based on the basic, innate movement patterns that the human body naturally develops from birth through the stages of standing and walking. Objective: To evaluate the acute effect of PM exercises on musculoskeletal pain and the perception of affect in pregnant women. Methods: Cross-sectional study in which participants underwent interventions using the PM protocol, while a walking protocol was employed as the control condition. Blood pressure (BP), heart rate (HR), respiratory rate (RR), oxygen saturation (SpO₂), pain intensity, and the feelings of pleasure and affective responses elicited by the exercise sessions were assessed. Results: Twenty-six healthy pregnant women participated. There was no effect of time (before vs. after) or treatment, nor was there an interaction between the two variables regarding cardiorespiratory responses. However, statistically significant differences were observed regarding pain and the affect/pleasure scale, demonstrating the benefits of Primordial Movements. Conclusion: The PM protocol proved safe for physical activity during pregnancy, promoting relief from lower back pain and a greater sense of pleasure compared to walking.
