Abstract

Introduction: Epilepsy is a long-term, common, and diverse neurological condition that is associated with a significant health impact and high social costs. In children, epileptic seizures arise from various syndromes and associated causes. When they become persistent, these seizures can lead to additional problems, such as developmental impairments, social difficulties, and neuropsychiatric disorders. Objective: This study described the profile of hospitalizations in children under 14 years of age due to epilepsy in the state of Minas Gerais, correlating it with the importance of physiotherapy intervention. Methods: This is a retrospective and quantitative approach. The data source used will be linked to DATASUS, through the SUS hospital morbidity data, adopting inclusion and exclusion criteria, and subsequently tabulating the data. Results: Over 10 years, Minas Gerais recorded 21,401 cases of hospitalizations for epilepsy in children under 14 years of age, predominantly in the 1-4 year age group, of mixed race, male, and of an urgent nature. The results highlighted the relevance of the disease as an important public health problem in the pediatric population. Conclusion: Hospitalizations of children with epilepsy in Minas Gerais, between 2016 and 2025, show a high demand for health services, mainly in children aged 1 to 4 years, with a higher incidence in boys and mixed-race individuals. In addition to clinical aspects, the data highlight social issues and access to health. Physiotherapy is an important strategy to help with motor development and social inclusion, especially in neurological cases. There is an urgent need to strengthen public policies that guarantee early diagnosis, treatment, and rehabilitation within the Unified Health System (SUS). The research broadens the understanding of hospitalizations in Minas Gerais and the importance of integrated care for children and adolescents with epilepsy.
