Abstract

Introduction: Type II Diabetes Mellitus (DM II) is a chronic disease characterized by persistent hyperglycemia due to insulin resistance and/or inadequate insulin secretion. It is associated with vascular complications such as chronic venous insufficiency and ulcers in the lower limbs, which affect quality of life. In addition to pharmacological treatments, Osteopathic Manipulative Treatment (OMT) has been explored for its potential benefits in stimulating venous return, although studies on its effects remain limited. Objective: This study aims to evaluate the impact of OMT on venous return in patients with DM II, using plethysmography to measure hemodynamic variables. Methods: A randomized clinical trial was conducted with 42 participants diagnosed with DM II, divided into two groups: G1 (n=21), which received osteopathic treatment alongside conventional medical treatment, and G2 (n=21), which received only conventional medical treatment. Plethysmography was used to assess venous return time and speed before and after interventions. Statistical analysis was performed using the t-test to compare results between the groups. Results: The results indicated that there were no statistically significant differences between the groups in terms of venous return time and speed. Patients who received osteopathic treatment showed a faster venous return compared to G2, but without statistical significance. Conclusion: Although the manual techniques used in OMT are benefical in improving musculoskeletal conditions, this study did not observe a significant impact on venous return in patients with DM II.
