Abstract

Introduction: Sleep plays an important role in the physiological restoration of the body, which is why its poor quality can have a negative impact on quality of life. Nocturia and urinary incontinence cause an increase in awakenings, resulting in a decrease in the duration and quality of sleep. Objective: To analyze the correlation between urinary incontinence and nocturia on sleep quality in non-menopausal incontinent women. Methods: This is an observational study of a cross-sectional, descriptive and analytical nature. The research was carried out in the city of Passo Fundo, using a form, from April to May 2021. The questionnaire applied consisted of thirty-nine questions, through an adaptation of the Kings Health Questionnaire (KHQ), responsible for evaluating quality of life in women who present symptoms of urinary incontinence. Results: 194 women participated in the study, with urinary incontinence and not being in the menopausal period. It was shown that sleep quality is not affected for individuals who have stress urinary incontinence, 115 (71%). However, in mixed urinary incontinence, sleep quality is slightly affected 14 (46.7%). Regarding nocturia, women who wake up 2 or more times a night to urinate, 11 (45.8%), have reduced sleep quality. Conclusion: The type of urinary incontinence influences the quality of sleep, as well as the presence of nocturia. Women with mixed urinary incontinence experience a reduction in sleep quality and waking up twice or more also leads to a reduction in sleep quality.
