Abstract

Introduction: There are few validated instruments for assessing haptic hand perception to discriminate between typical and atypical sensory processing biomarkers. Thus, it is required to develop a feasible, psychometrically validated test to evaluate haptic hand perception. Objective: To develop an economically viable and psychometrically validated test to assess haptic hand perception and discriminate between typical and atypical sensory processing biomarkers. Methods: Test development and psychometric analysis. Seven experts developed the test, 10 health professionals participated in construct validity, 56 students in usability analysis and 100 people of the community in reliability and internal consistency analysis. Results: The Hand Haptic Perception Test was developed with 6 test activities with geometric shapes in high relief, with three levels of difficulty. The application, preparation and the materials used in its development has been described in terms of replicability. Experts considered the test relevant and technically well designed and described. Usability analysis showed that participants understood the test purpose and use. Intraclass correlation coefficients ranged from 0.88 to 0.99, showed good reliability in intra- and inter-examiner analyses and Cronbach’s alpha (alfa= 0.8) was high. Confirmatory factor analysis greater than 0.60, showed good internal structure. Conclusion: This research resulted in the development of the Hand Haptic Perception Test with geometric figures in relief (HP-rg), with different levels of difficulty, using standardized, accessible and easily accessible materials, usable by students, that presented construct validity and reliability, and was suitable for clinical use and use in research. Its differential is the detailed and systematic way of evaluating the haptic ability in the recognition of geometric figures.
