Abstract

Introduction: Family-centered service is characterized by collaborative partnerships between family members and healthcare professionals, including the active involvement of families in goal setting and the intervention process. This is one of the principles of TREINI®, an interdisciplinary and family-centered intervention program developed for children with Cerebral Palsy (CP), Down Syndrome, and Myelomeningocele. Objective: To investigate parents' perceptions of the effects of the TREINI® program on the performance and satisfaction of functional goals in children with CP; to evaluate whether the TREINI® program incorporates aspects of family-professional collaboration and parents' satisfaction with the intervention. Methods: A single-group quasi-experimental study was conducted involving 114 children with CP (age = 7.31±3.24 years). The Canadian Occupational Performance Measure (COPM) and an Experience Questionnaire were used as outcome measures. The intervention protocol lasted 3 months, 5 times a week, for 3-4 hours per day, and involved training functional tasks in a naturalistic environment associated with the use of a therapeutic suit. Results: Approximately 63% (n=72) of participants demonstrated improvements in performance and satisfaction, ranging from 1 to 9 points on the COPM. The TREINI® program resulted in significant improvements in performance and satisfaction of functional goals (p < 0.05). The majority of parents (87%, n=99) reported that the intervention incorporated family-professional collaboration, and 93% (n=106) expressed satisfaction with the intervention. Conclusion: In parents' perception, performance and satisfaction with functional goals improved after children received the TREINI® program. Further studies are still needed.
