Epidemiological profile of live births with encephalocele in Minas Gerais (2021-2025) and the role of Physiotherapy

Introduction: Encephalocele is an uncommon congenital anomaly of the central nervous system, characterized by the protrusion of brain tissue and/or meninges through defects in the skull bones, resulting from problems in the closure of the neural tube during the embryonic phase. Objective: This study described the epidemiological profile of live-born children with encephalocele in the state of Minas Gerais between 2021 and 2025. Methods: This is a retrospective and quantitative approach. The data source used will be linked to the Monitoring Panel of Congenital Malformations, Deformities and Chromosomal Anomalies, adopting inclusion and exclusion criteria, and subsequently tabulating the data. Results: In 5 years, Minas Gerais registered 71 live births with encephalocele, predominantly in the maternal age range of 25 to 29 years, cesarean delivery, brown skin color, female sex. The findings corroborate the scientific literature, which describes encephalocele as a condition with variable prevalence, but persistent in different populations. Conclusion: The results reinforce the need to expand prenatal care and early diagnosis, favoring timely interventions and a better prognosis for affected newborns. In this context, the relevance of multidisciplinary action, especially physiotherapy, in the care and rehabilitation process of these children is highlighted.
