Functionality and Quality of Life in Institutionalized Elderly with Cognitive Decline in Três Rios

Introduction: Population aging is associated with an increased prevalence of chronic diseases, functional disabilities, and cognitive decline, which raises the demand for specialized care and Homes for the Aged for the elderly. Objective: To investigate the quality of life and functionality of older people with cognitive decline residing in a Homes for the Aged in the city of Três Rios, RJ. Methods: A cross-sectional, descriptive study was conducted with 19 older people. The Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE) and the Timed Up and Go (TUG) were applied. The study included institutionalized older people with cognitive decline as determined by the MMSE. Information on medication use was also collected. Results: Polypharmacy was predominant (63.15% - n=12); 42.1% (n=8) completed the TUG in more than 21 seconds. In Fisher's Exact Test, there was no significant association between performance on the TUG test and the number of medications, nor between length of institutionalization and medication use or functional performance. Conclusion: The sample presents a heterogeneous profile regarding functional capacity and medication use. Furthermore, most volunteers completed the TUG within the appropriate time, without indicating a moderate or high risk of falls.
