Cognitive profile of elderly people residing in a homes for the aged in the municipality of Cataguases/MG

Introduction: Population aging is a worldwide phenomenon capable of generating systemic repercussions that can lead to a decline in cognitive functions, impacting the functionality and independence of the elderly population, especially those residing in Homes for the Aged (HA). Objective: To evaluate the cognitive profile and possible factors associated with the institutionalization process of elderly residents in an HS in the municipality of Cataguases/MG. Methods: Observational cross-sectional study with a sample composed of 34 elderly individuals with a mean age of 74 years (± 9 years), of both sexes. Data collection methods included: a semi-structured questionnaire to obtain sociodemographic variables; the Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE); and a hand dynamometer for assessing handgrip strength (HGS). Results: Cognitive decline was observed in 59% of those evaluated (n=20). The MMSE score showed a negative correlation with age, therefore, the lower the MMSE score, the older the individual (p=0.025). There was a positive correlation between the MMSE score and HGS, with higher HGS corresponding to higher MMSE scores (p=0.012). Furthermore, the study established a negative correlation between HGS and age, where lower HGS associated with older volunteers (p=0.047). The study also found an association between cognitive decline and the number of medications used by the elderly (p=0.033). Conclusion: Cognitive decline correlated with increasing age and decreasing HGS, and was associated with the number of medications used. A thorough geriatric assessment focusing on cognitive capacity in elderly residents of HA is necessary to identify factors that may negatively impact the health of this population.
