Abstract

Introduction: Mastectomy can lead to postoperative complications, with lymphedema being one of the most common. It occurs due to the accumulation of lymph resulting from impairment of the lymphatic vessels, causing increased limb volume, pain, a sensation of heaviness, and functional limitation. Neuromuscular taping has been studied as an adjunctive therapy because it promotes lymphatic drainage and reduces edema. Objective: To describe the effectiveness of neuromuscular taping in the management of lymphedema in women who have undergone mastectomy. Methodology: A systematic review was conducted in accordance with PRISMA (Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses) 2020 guidelines, using the PubMed, SciELO (Scientific Electronic Library Online), LILACS (Latin American and Caribbean Health Sciences Literature), Cochrane, and VHL (Virtual Health Library) databases. Studies that used neuromuscular taping in the postoperative period for the treatment of lymphedema, comparing it with conventional care, were included. The analysis was qualitative. Results: Five studies were included: two randomized clinical trials, one non-randomized clinical trial, one observational study, and one review. The findings indicate that taping can reduce limb volume, improve mobility, and enhance lymphatic drainage. However, it is more effective as a complement to complex decongestive therapy and is not fully effective when used alone. Conclusion: Neuromuscular taping is a promising and well-accepted intervention; however, more robust and standardized studies are needed to confirm its effectiveness.
