Abstract

Introduction: The rehabilitation of patients with brain injury is challenging, with various treatment protocols being proposed to promote patient autonomy, including Motor Imagery (MI). Objective: To analyze, through a bibliographic review, the use of MI and neurofeedback as rehabilitation tools, identifying national and international scientific evidence on their efficacy to promote autonomy in the daily activities of patients with brain injury. Methods: A literature review was conducted with searches in the PubMed, SciELO, and BVS databases. Articles in Portuguese and English published in the last 10 years, focusing on clinical studies, were filtered. The search keywords used were: stroke, rehabilitation, postural balance, physical therapy specialty, virtual reality, cerebral palsy, neurological, game therapy, Wii therapy, neuroimaging, virtual reality exposure therapy, neurological rehabilitation, motor imagery, kinesthetic imagery, visual imagery, and mental practice. Inclusion criteria encompassed original articles, clinical trials, case-control studies, and case series published in the last 10 years, focusing on the use of MI in patients with brain injury. Results: A total of 193 articles on the topic were found. After reading titles, abstracts, and full texts, 9 articles were selected for this review. The analyzed articles demonstrated the use of MI in the recovery of motor control and functional independence in cases of brain injury. The technique activates specific areas of the brain and promotes neural plasticity, essential for motor recovery, contributing to the improvement of motor coordination, postural control, and functional independence even in severe lesions. Conclusion: The analyzed studies indicate that MI has the potential to assist in the rehabilitation of brain injury cases, favoring neural plasticity, motor recovery, and functional independence, especially in severe cases of paresis, justifying its adoption alongside traditional methods. Future research is needed to optimize its usage strategies.
