Abstract

Introduction: Depression is a mental disorder that affects a large part of the population. Thus, among the treatments offered by the Unified Health System, phytotherapy stands out. Objective: The benefits of using medicinal plants in the management of depression were analyzed through a literature review, based on the most recent scientific publications. Methods: This is an integrative review, with data collection carried out between July and October 2024, through the analysis of articles published in the last 10 years, in English and Portuguese, free of charge, available in full online, in the Scientific Electronic Library Online (Scielo) and Publisher Medline (PubMed) databases, as well as on the Google Scholar search engine. Results: The final sample consisted of 24 published studies following the sample selection criteria, and it was observed that the plants Valeriana oficinallis, Hypericum Perforatum and Crocus sativus L. have positive effects in the treatment of depression. Conclusion: The evidence showed the benefits emphasizing that herbal medicines have sedative and antioxidant effects on neural cells, gene modulation action on the corticotropin releasing factor and activation of the serotinergic and dopaminergic systems provided by their use in depressed patients. However, it is important to be supervised so that they do not cause negative effects with prolonged use.
