Abstract

Objective: To map in the literature the challenges faced by nursing professionals in providing care in emergency services. Methods: This is an integrative review, with searches conducted in the following databases: Medical Literature Analysis and Retrieval System Online (MEDLINE), via PUBMED, Scientific Electronic Library Online (SCIELO), Excerpta Medica dataBASE (EMBASE) and SCOPUS. Combinations of descriptors in Portuguese and English were used. Original articles were included, in all languages, published between 2014 and 2024. Duplicate articles, those with paid access and those that did not answer the guiding question were excluded. A total of 459 articles were found. Results: The final sample included 13 articles, most of which were from the year 2024 and were produced on the Asian continent. Most of the nurses participating in the research had only undergraduate training and no specialised training in emergency or trauma nursing. The challenges raised can be divided into two areas: in the field of service management and structure: emergency room overcrowding, shortage of material resources, absence or inadequacy of standards, flows and routines, which contributes to the weakening of the team; and in the field of the workforce: stress caused by the need to deal with unpredictable and complex situations that require rapid decision-making; insufficient preparation and lack of specialised training, as well as situations of violence and verbal abuse from relatives and/or companions. Conclusion: The challenges faced by nursing professionals are complex, multifactorial and may be related to the quality of care provided to patients.
