Abstract

Objective: We evaluated the acute effects of phototherapy on muscle endurance in patients in the late postoperative period of anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) reconstruction. Methods: Ten individuals were randomized into a control group (CG) and a phototherapy group (GF). The first group received phototherapy in six points of the quadriceps femoris muscles bilaterally in the first session and placebo in the second, while the second group was submitted to the opposite. Participants were evaluated by endurance test, modified Star Excursion Balance Test (SEBT), creatine kinase (CK) analysis, BORG perceived exertion scale, and 1 repetition maximum test (1RM). For statistical analysis, Student's t test was used for quantitative variables and two-way ANOVA for comparison between pre and post placebo or phototherapy groups. Results: There was an increase in the number of maximum repetitions (GF: 16.50 ± 3.74 vs. GC: 12.22 ± 4.02; p < 0.05). No increase was observed in placebo time (GF: 23.03 ± 5.45 vs. GC: 20.44 ± 3.81; p > 0.05) and in SEBT (GF: 100.63 ± 8.19 vs. GC: 101.38 ± 3.58; p > 0.05). CK analysis also did not show better results (GFpre: 206.38 ± 103.22 and GFpost: 210.00 ± 101.50 vs. GCpre: 428.89 ± 303.11 and GCpost: 428.89 ± 297.83 ; p > 0.05). Conclusion: These findings indicate that phototherapy is capable of improving endurance in this population.
