Abstract

Introduction: The first cases of COVID-19 emerged in December 2019, with people diagnosed with severe pneumonia. After the results of respiratory samples from infected individuals, the coronavirus was identified. With the arrival of the disease in Brazil and its rapid contagion, the governor of the state of Ceará adopted strict and cautious measures to reduce the spread of COVID-19. Objective: The objective of this study was to investigate the behavior of COVID-19 incidence, mortality, and lethality data. Methods: This is an ecological, observational, descriptive study. An epidemiological survey was carried out within the Ceará Public Health Management Transparency Platform (IntegraSUS) and on the Ministry of Health website. Results: In 2021, it was possible to identify a widespread increase in cases, which was called the second wave of COVID-19. In 2020, the state capital had the highest mortality rate, followed by metropolitan regions, and in 2022, the state capital, Fortaleza, will no longer be ranked among the places with the highest mortality rates. When observing the demographic pyramid of the municipalities with the highest COVID-19 fatality rates in 2020 in Ceará, it is still possible to identify a large population volume between 20 and 60 years old. It is also worth noting that the number of total cases has reduced considerably, which may have led to an increase in fatality rates in municipalities with fewer cases and fewer deaths. Conclusion: Government actions, such as vaccination and social distancing, appear to have succeeded in promoting a reduction in COVID-19 complications, fatality rates, mortality, and incidence.
