Is paracentesis able to change pulmonary function of cirrhotic patients with ascites?

Abstract

Introduction: It is known that ascites stands out as the source of nutritional, physical and functional limitations in cirrhotic patients. The negative impact of ascites on changes in intra-abdominal and intrathoracic pressure underlies the importance of investigating the lung function of these patients before and after paracentesis. Objective: To compare lung function in cirrhotic patients with ascites, before and after paracentesis. Methods: Observational study with nine cirrhotic patients who underwent paracentesis at the hepatology outpatient clinic of the Polydoro Ernani de São Thiago University Hospital, Federal University of Santa Catarina. Patients underwent exercise capacity assessment using the 6-minute walk test (6MWT). Anthropometric and pulmonary function assessments were performed pre and post paracentesis. For statistical analysis, the Shapiro-Wilk test was performed to evaluate data distribution and the Wilcoxon test to compare lung function. Results: There was no statistical difference in lung function before and after paracentesis and in the distance covered in the 6MWT compared to healthy individuals. Conclusions: Paracentesis alone does not appear to alter lung function. Therefore, it is important to investigate the effects of lung reexpansion therapies associated with clinical treatment in this population.
