Training of the pelvic floor muscles in the prevention and treatment of urinary incontinence during the pregnancy period: literature review

Introduction: Pelvic physiotherapy acts in the prevention and treatment of urogynecological pathologies and in the rehabilitation of pelvic floor muscle (PFM) dysfunctions. The pelvic floor is the set of bones, muscles and ligaments that supports organs such as the bladder, uterus, intestine and the lower abdomen. During pregnancy, the human body undergoes a series of hormonal, physiological and physical changes, which are risk factors for the incidence of urinary incontinence (UI). PFM training is the conservative treatment most used today to improve UI in pregnant women. Objective: To analyze the effectiveness of pelvic floor muscle training in the prevention and treatment of UI in pregnant women. Methods: This is an integrative literature review. Surveys were carried out in the electronic databases PubMed and PEDro, using the descriptors "Urinary Incontinence", "Pregnant" and “Exercise”. Randomized clinical trials published in the last 10 years were selected. The results found in the searches were analyzed according to the title and summary of the research, carried out between May and June 2023. Results: A total of 124 studies were collected on the platforms and 23 of them met the selection criteria: randomized clinical trial published in the last 10 years. After analyzing the title and summary, 09 articles fit the study proposal. The results were separated into prevention and treatment protocols. Conclusion: PFM training has been shown to be effective in preventing and treating UI in pregnant women, but there is a lack of high- quality studies on the topic.
