Abstract

Introduction: cancer is considered one of the main public health issues worldwide, leading to deaths and high treatment costs. The use of central venous catheters is essential for various types of treatments in a hospital setting. Objective: this literature review describes the relationship between maintenance and complications resulting from the use of peripheral insertion central venous catheters in oncology. Methods: this is a narrative literature review. The search was conducted in the following databases: Latin American and Caribbean Literature in Health Sciences (LILACS), United States National Library of Medicine (PUBMED), Medical Literature Analysis and Retrieval System Online (MEDLINE), and Scientific Electronic Library Online (SCIELO). The inclusion criteria defined were articles published in Brazilian Portuguese, English, and Spanish, with a time frame of five years (2023-2019), and complete texts. The descriptors/MeSH terms used were: Peripheral Central Venous Catheter AND Oncology AND Nursing Care. Results: twelve articles were selected for analysis and discussion on the subject. National studies describe the care of central venous catheters, the main complications resulting from their use and handling, professionals' knowledge, continuing education, and quality of care. International studies mostly address complications related to catheters and prevention methods. Conclusion: The main challenges associated with peripherally inserted central catheters in oncology were: infections, thrombosis, and catheter dislodgement. The importance of proper maintenance and ongoing training for nursing teams directly involved with this demand was emphasized. Future investigations are recommended to broaden the focus on the effectiveness of maintenance strategies and patient follow-up, enhancing safety and well-being in nursing care.
