Nursing care for elderly patients with delirium: an integrative review

Introduction: early recognition of delirium is a challenge for health professionals due to its varied clinical presentation. Although there are guidelines for the assessment and management of delirium, adherence to these recommendations is not always rigorous. Interventions for the management of delirium include pharmacological and non-pharmacological approaches. Objective: to identify nursing care in the literature for the management of elderly patients with delirium during hospitalization. Methods: integrative literature review, organized in six stages, conducted between September and October 2024. The search for data in the databases occurred online, in the Medical Literature Analysis and Retrieval System Online (MEDLINE), in the Latin American and Caribbean Literature in Health Sciences (LILACS), in the Nursing Databases (BDENF), in the Spanish Bibliographic Index in Health Sciences (IBECS), in Scopus Preview and in the Scientific Electronic Library Online (SciELO). Gray literature was evaluated in Google Scholar. Results: 7,792 records were identified and the sample consisted of 18 publications. A series of care measures were listed in the literature. Education for the team was the most cited care measure, followed by family integration, mobilization and assessment, and regular cognitive stimulation. Conclusion: this integrative review allowed the identification of important nursing interventions for the prevention and management of delirium in hospitalized elderly patients, factors that depend on an integrated approach that involves continuous education of the nursing team.
