Abstract

Introduction: Obstetric care during labor (LA) in the hospital environment has been marked by interventions considered unnecessary. Integrative and Complementary Practices (ICPs) emerge as preventive or therapeutic strategies for individualized and humanized care during LA. Objective: To identify in the national scientific literature the applicability of Integrative and Complementary Health Practices in the management of labor. Methods: This is an integrative literature review using the Virtual Health Library (VHL) as a research vehicle, selecting health evidence from the following databases: Latin American and Caribbean Literature in Health Sciences (LILACS), Nursing Database (BDENF) and Medical Literature and Retrieval System Online (MEDLINE). The searches to obtain the studies were performed using the Health Sciences Descriptors (DeCs) combined with the Boolean expression AND: 1) complementary therapies AND childbirth; 2) non-pharmacological methods AND humanization. Publications from the last ten years, in Portuguese and available in full, were included. Information about authorship, year of publication, main title, objectives, research modality, level of evidence and relevant results were extracted. Results: A final sample of 12 articles was obtained. It was found that PICS can be used to relieve pain, reduce labor time, reduce anxiety and stress, and promote relaxation, comfort, concentration and empowerment for women. Conclusion: Integrative and Complementary Health Practices are still used to a limited extent in the management of labor. New research should be conducted to explore their applicability and effectiveness as alternative practices to interventions commonly performed in obstetric care. Few studies have demonstrated the knowledge of health professionals about PICS, as well as their adherence to these practices.
